Located in the Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, the museum's design has been inspired by its surrounding landscapes: a virgin lagoon island, between sand and sea, shade and light.
The Museum's Permanent Galleries are divided into four wings: Ancient Times, Medieval Times, Early Modern Times, and Contemporary Period. The works tell the evolution of human history: from the origins of the species to globalization.
The museum showcases the relationship between pieces of art that were created at different times, in different places and by people from different civilizations. The result is a remarkable and growing collection. The museum brings different cultures together to shine fresh light on these common stories of humanity, beyond individual civilizations, times, or places. The galleries are not separated by geography but set in chronological order. The aim is to encourage respect, curiosity, learning and self-reflection.
