Alanya is located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The city is a popular destination because of its seaside and beaches. Alanya castle, with its 13th century citadel, the walls and the five-storey octagonal Red Tower is the major touristic attraction. The wall which surrounds the castle is 6.5 kilometres (4.0 miles) long and includes 140 towers. The Red Tower, containing the municipal ethnographic museum, is a fine example of medieval military architecture. It was build to guard and protect the shipyard. The hill on which the castle was build has caves at the level of the sea, which can be visited with boat excursions.
