You'll feel like you're a million miles away from the beaches, as you head inland to seek out the secrets of Almeria. First up the 10th Century Alcazaba fortress. You may recognise it as the exotic capital of Dorne from HBO's smash-hit series Game of Thrones. Wander the ornate gardens, admire the water features and discover the ruined palace of Muslim emirs as well as a Christian-era castle.
Then it's time to wander the old town. Its maze of flat-roofed homes has a Moorish air to it. You'll check out the bulky, fortress-like cathedral and poke around the Central Market, too. And for the icing on the cake, why not pop into a typical bar to munch on tapas washed down by a glass of wine.
