Visit ARTIS-Micropia, the world's first and only microbe museum next to the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo. Just a 10-minute walk from the city centre. They are everywhere, in the air, on your skin and in your gut. They make food taste good, keep you healthy and maintain balance in nature. Microbes are essential. At Micropia this invisible world comes to life through living microbes, microscopes, interactive displays and daily talks from the lab technicians who share stories about microbes. Every month there's a microbe of the month, on which the lab technician will get more into depth during the lab talks,
Your visit begins with a clever elevator ride that “shrinks” you down to a microscopic level, setting the tone for what's to come. As you move through the exhibit, interact with installations like the Kiss-o-meter to see how many microbes you exchange with someone you kiss or try the Body Scan to visualize the bacteria in your body. Tiny things you never see, like fungi, bacteria, algae, are brought to life. This gives you a chance to see them, learn their roles and appreciate how essential they are.
Water Lab
What is hidden in a single drop of water? Peer through microscopes to explore three aquariums containing water from a farm ditch, the sea and Amsterdam's canals. While they may look like ordinary water, each is teeming with microscopic life just waiting to be uncovered.
