Stretching for more than 2,300 kilometres along Australia’s northeastern coast, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system and one of the planet’s great natural wonders. Made up of thousands of individual reefs and hundreds of islands, it’s a vast underwater world shaped by coral, warm tropical waters and an extraordinary variety of marine life. From the Queensland coast, you can explore this remarkable ecosystem on everything from boat trips and snorkelling excursions to scenic flights over the reef.
You can swim among colourful coral gardens, spot sea turtles, rays and reef fish, or dive deeper to see the reef from below the surface. Trips depart from several coastal towns, including Cairns, Port Douglas and Airlie Beach, giving you plenty of ways to experience it. The Great Barrier Reef is home to more than 1,500 species of fish and around 600 types of coral, making it one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth.
