After a short drive, you will reach the palace of Knossos, which is just outside the city, and it's the largest Minoan palace in Crete and a European Heritage Site.
The large archeological site dates back to the millennium-old Minoan civilization and includes frescoes and ancient baths. Over the years, Knossos was repeatedly destroyed and built up again. The Palace counts over about 800 rooms, it is believed that the number was much higher.
Visit Heraklion city, which is both port city and capital of the Greek island of Crete. At the Venetian harbor of the city, you can find the fortress Koules, which was built in the 16th century.
