The inside story
Plaza Consistorial, also known as City Hall Square, is the historic heart of Pamplona's Old Town and one of the city's most iconic gathering spots. Surrounded by colourful townhouses and the Town Hall's eye-catching 18th-century exterior, the square has been at the centre of local life since the city’s boroughs were joined together in 1423. It's best known as the stage for the opening and closing ceremonies of the San Fermín Festival, a nine-day celebration honouring Pamplona's patron saint, Saint Fermín. Even outside festival season, the square is a popular meeting place thanks to its central location at the crossroads of the Old Town's busiest streets.
City Hall Square is a great spot to take a break and watch the city go by. You can pull up a chair at a terrace café for a coffee or a glass of local wine, then wander through the surrounding streets lined with pintxos bars and independent shops selling handmade goods and tasty nibbles. Or you can take a seat at a traditional restaurant and try local favourites like pochas, a hearty white bean stew that's a staple of Navarrese cuisine. Thanks to its location in the heart of the Old Town, it's also the perfect starting point for exploring nearby landmarks like Plaza del Castillo, the cathedral and Pamplona's medieval city walls.
