The inside story

Located in the heart of Seville, the Real Alcazar is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Spain. This is a group of palaces surrounded by a wall next to the city's Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. Located at the borders of Casco Antiguo (the Old Town), the Real Alcazar was ordered to be built by the caliph Omeya Abderramán III in 913 to serve as the center of government in Seville. It was constructed over an old Visigothic settlement which in turn had formerly been a Roman settlement. In 1248, after the conquest of Seville by Fernando III, the Real Alcazar became a Royal Palace (its currently held status) and thereafter it experienced a new phase of expansion initiated by his son Alfonso X, who retained the existing structures and ordered the construction of the Gothic palace. In 1364, Pedro I came to be the forerunner of the Mudéjar Palace, one of the most spectacular areas of the complex.

The compound represents Europe's oldest active royal palace, which for this reason has frequently been used as accommodation for members of the Spanish Royal Family and heads of State visiting the city. If you come to explore the Alcázar, don't miss the opportunity to stroll through the gardens where you can appreciate Arabian, Renaissance and modern characteristics. The gardens are arranged in terraces with vibrant vegetation, numerous orange and palm trees, fountains and pavilions.
