The inside story
The Requesens Palace is one of the most important palaces in Barcelona. It is the current headquarters of Real Academia de las Buenas Letras and was the largest private palace of medieval times in the city. Requesens Palace is located in the district of Ciutat Vella and owes its name to the fact that originally it belonged to one of the branches of the Requesens family, one of the most important of its time. The palace was built in the 13th century on the Roman wall of Barcelona. It was renovated and expanded several times, but retains the original Gothic structure. The palace is also home to the Gallery of Illustrious Catalans, a permanent exhibition of portraits of renowned Catalan characters.
