Situated on a curve of the Rhine River, close to the French and German borders, Basel is renowned as the hub of Switzerland's chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. Simultaneously, it boasts a rich cultural heritage, hosting esteemed museums, galleries, and performance venues nestled within its historic urban spaces.
The cityscape of Basel presents an intriguing blend of old and new. Modern architectural endeavours stand in stark contrast to the medieval quarters of the city, symbolising Basel's ongoing evolution over centuries. As the capital of the canton of Basel-Stadt, the city marries political significance with economic clout and cultural diversity.
The historic district of Altstadt Grossbasel bears remnants of ancient city walls and the reconstruction that ensued after the major earthquake of 1356. Alongside riverside districts and modern urban areas, Basel offers a multi-layered cityscape moulded by history, commerce, science, and international exchange.
