At the meeting point of the Danube and Sava Rivers, the city was a strategic fort during Roman, Ottoman, Byzantine, Serbian and Austrian empires – the prize for a centuries-long tug of war. As you ride through the city, look out for Belgrade Fortress, which serves as an imposing relic of its battle-torn history. The next part of the tour takes you on a scenic ride to Zemun, a characterful town absorbed by the city in the early 1900s. Here, artistic cafés, cobblestone streets, leafy parks, and even sandy beaches line the riverbank, and there’s a village-like atmosphere.
