Located in the westernmost state of Austria, Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg lying on the eastern shores of Lake Constance. While the city is famous for its annual summer music festival Bregenzer Festspiele, it also features multiple attractions inside the Oberstadt (Upper Town). Situated on Central Europe's third-largest freshwater lake Bregenz also offers travelers a wide range of outdoor activities from boating trips and cycling along the shoreline to relaxing on a lakeside beach.
With a heritage dating back to 1500 BC, Bregenz is one of the most fortified places in the region. Visit the Upper Town to see Bregenz's old town with the city walls from the Middle Ages that are still largely preserved today. Climb up the city landmark St. Martin’s Tower (Martinsturm) where you can enjoy picturesque views of the city from above. Follow the Meißnerstiege and pass the parish church of St. Gallus for more great views from Kirchstraße, as well as the Deuringschlössle (a small castle) reaching the narrowest house in Europe at Kirchstraße 29. Finally, hop on the Pfänderbahn cable car where in just 6 minutes you can journey from Old Town to the Pfänder Summit at over 1000 meters above sea level.
Don't miss the opportunity to discover the city during the summer months, where you'll certainly hear all the buzz about the Bregenz Festival. Occurring between July and August, the lakeside floating stage becomes a venue space attracting over 7,000 guests to watch live performances from the stands. The floating stage is open to the public to visit for free - go on and take a peek! For a more immersive experience book a backstage tour where you will also see the Festival Hall and walk on the stage.
