Many traditions have been preserved in the Maramures, despite the economical and industrial development of the last two centuries. One of the most interesting combinations between tradition and technology is represented by the Mocanita of the Vaser Valley.
The forest railway here was built in the 1920's after the first World War. After 1990, most of these railways were destroyed, with few exceptions, including the forest track from the Vaser Valley. Since the year 2000, with help from the Swiss foundation Hilfe fur die Wasserthalbahn, trains are now also used to transport tourists. This railway is unique in Europe because of its steam locomotives, which drive small wagons into remote areas, completely isolated from any modern life.
