The inside story
Malahide Castle is a medieval castle, close to the village of Malahide, nine miles north of central Dublin. An enchanting structure, the castle is steeped in history and gives valuable insights into medieval times. Set on over 260 acres of land, the castle grounds are home to beautiful botanic gardens, pathways and parkland.
The estate originated in 1185, when King Henry II gifted the lands and harbor of Malahide to Richard Talbot, a knight who accompanied Henry II to Ireland in 1177. The castle which stands today was built in a number of phases over the centuries and some of the oldest parts even date back to the 12th century.
The castle was home to the Talbot family for 791 years and in 1975 the castle was sold to the Irish State, making it one of the longest inhabited castles by one family in Ireland. The castle opened to the public in the 1980s and has undergone various renovations and refurbishments over the years.
Now a popular tourist attraction, take a tour of the castle and discover the interior, filled with beautiful period furniture and an extensive collection of Irish paintings. Highlights of the castle include the Oak Room with its dark paneling and furniture dating back to the 1600s and the Great Hall, built in 1495 for banquets. There is also an exhibition area on the ground floor of the castle, telling the story of the Talbot family.
Discover the grounds of the castle with its magnificent gardens and parklands. Don’t miss the Castle Gardens, home to over 5,000 species of plants and trees from all over the world. Visit the Butterfly House within the Walled Garden and watch over 20 different species of butterfly flutter among tropical plants.
Go on a woodland walk, enjoy a picnic in one of the picnic areas or let the kids loose at the Castle Playground. On the grounds you will find soccer fields, tennis courts, a cricket club and golf course. There is also a gift shop and café located within the Visitor Center.
Malahide Castle is open all year round and is accessible by bus, train or car and there is free parking on site.
