Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in south-west China, is often called the City of Eternal Spring because of its mild, pleasant climate. Tucked between mountains and lakes, it’s a place where natural beauty meets rich cultural variety. You can wander through the otherworldly Stone Forest, take a peaceful walk by Dianchi Lake, or mingle with locals at the lively flower and bird markets. 1. Wander through the Stone Forest

The Stone Forest, or Shilin, is an absolute must-see when you're in Kunming. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its towering limestone rock formations, which look just like a forest made of stone. As you wander through the maze-like paths, you’ll spot spires, pillars and shapes carved by wind and water over millions of years. Some even have local legends behind them, like the Ashima Stone, which is said to be the shape of a beautiful girl who was turned to stone.

2. Visit Yuantong Temple

Yuantong Temple, one of Kunming’s oldest and most important Buddhist sites, is a peaceful retreat tucked away from the city’s hustle and bustle. The temple grounds are home to a series of elegant halls dedicated to various Buddhist deities, a pretty pond filled with colourful koi fish and beautifully maintained gardens that invite quiet reflection.

3. Stroll around Green Lake Park

Green Lake Park, also known as Cui Hu Park, is a favourite with both locals and visitors. With its willow-lined paths, blooming lotus flowers and traditional pavilions, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed stroll or a laidback picnic. If you happen to visit in winter, you might even see the thousands of red-beaked seagulls that migrate all the way from Siberia.
