Northern Lanzarote has managed to keep its old-world charm under wraps. Explore a side of the island that's all about art, culture and some of Mother Nature's finest work. You'll visit the famous Jameos del Agua caves, Mirador del Rio viewpoint and the historic village of Teguise, too. Laura, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Jameos del Agua is a true one-off, a place that has to be seen to be understood. It's a fusion of volcanic rock, caves, architecture and plant life which is an events venue and natural wonder rolled into one.'
We'll start the day at Jameos del Agua. Local artist Cesar Manrique combined man-made with natural to convert lava tube caves into a chic bar and concert hall. Keep an eye out for the rare blind albino crabs. Next, we'll cut through dramatic volcanic landscapes to the Mirador del Rio – another Manrique masterpiece. Laura says, ‘Once again, the artist has combined creative vision and architectural innovation with the natural world to compose something uplifting yet with artistic merit.' At almost 500 metres above sea level, the Mirador offers unbeatable views of La Graciosa island.
You'll also visit Teguise, the island's former capital. It boasts a number of eye-catching palaces, convents and churches as well as many well-preserved examples of traditional Canarian architecture. Visit the Timple Museum to learn about this typical Canarian musical instrument before free time to explore, browse the shops, or take snaps in the town's square.
