Osijek is one of the prettiest Croatian cities you’ve never heard of. This two-part trip will take you on walking tours of the modern city centre and the full-of-character old town. In the former of the two, you’ll stroll through Ante Starčević Square – a statue-centred meeting spot named after a famous Croatian politician. You’ll also pass the red-brick spire of the Church of St Peter and Paul and the grand Croatian National Theatre. At the midway point, you’ll be driven for 10 minutes to an even more historic area of the city. In this, the old town, you’ll see ancient bastions and battlements, plus barracks that hail back to the 1800s. After a tour between the terracotta-topped maze of buildings, you’ll head back to the coach for a half-hour drive back to the port.
