Today, you’ll visit one of Regensburg’s biggest and most popular sights – the Walhalla Memorial Hall. From the port, you’ll travel with your guide to the 170-year-old monument, which sits on top of a hill overlooking the Danube River. It was commissioned by Ludwig I – Bavaria’s king from 1825 to 1848 – and looks like a replica of the Greek Parthenon in Athens. It was built to commemorate some of Germany’s most famous figures, from scientists and composers to Holy Roman emperors and bishops. The giant marble hall is home to over 130 memorial busts, which you’ll be able to see up close during your wander around. Stay on the lookout for Albert Einstein’s sculpture – he’s one of the most recognisable spots. And don’t forget to take some pictures from the top of the 358-step-staircase – the views of Bavaria’s countryside from here are top-class. When you’re finished, all that’s left is the return journey to the port.
