Built in the first half of the 13th century and located on the most extreme point of the Ortygia promontory, Maniace Castle is considered one of the most important monuments dating back to the Swabian domain of the city of Syracuse.
The imposing structure was commissioned by Emperor Frederick II and it's named after the Byzantine general who took the city in 1038. The castle's square plan is enclosed within a long perimeter wall with four cylindrical towers at the corners.
