For those who have never tried rafting in Albania, don’t worry — the Osum River rapids are level 2, making this adventure safe and suitable for beginners. The excursion takes place in late spring or autumn, depending on the river’s flow from rain or melting snow.
Although not extreme, rafting through the Osum Grand Canyon is an exciting and unforgettable experience for nature and adventure lovers.
The Grand Canyon of Osum, often called the “Albanian Colorado,” was shaped by the Osum River over millions of years. Geologists believe the river once flowed underground, slowly eroding the rock above. Today, its 30 km stretch includes narrow sections only 2 meters wide and others up to 35 meters. The canyon’s walls display stunning rock formations resembling humans and animals, named by locals for their unique shapes.
Your rafting adventure begins near Corovoda, in the Skrapar district, with a stop at the sacred Bektashi mausoleum, Tyrbe. Equipped with helmets and life jackets, participants paddle through 15 km of turquoise waters reaching depths of up to 70 meters. The highlight comes when passing beneath natural waterfalls. After about 1 hour and 45 minutes, the tour ends in Corovoda with a traditional Albanian lunch.
