This journey takes you to Krujë, the historical heart of Albania. Nestled just 36 km from Tirana, Krujë was established as the first capital of Albania in 1190 and continues to be a symbol of national pride. This city, founded by the Illyrian tribe of the Albanoi, is also the birthplace of the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Its ancient name translates to 'fountain', reflecting the region's rich water resources.
Departing Tirana at 9 a.m., you'll arrive in Krujë around 10 a.m. and begin your exploration at Krujë Castle, perched atop the city’s highest point. From this vantage point, you'll enjoy panoramic views before visiting the Skanderbeg Museum, which chronicles Albania's resistance against Ottoman forces, and the Ethnographic Museum, showcasing local traditions throughout the centuries.
Next, you'll wander through the old bazaar, a colourful labyrinth of crafts, hand-woven rugs, spices, and souvenirs, where local artisans work in traditional, open-air stalls.
The final stop on your journey is the Sari Salltik Cave, located 10 km from Krujë at 1,100 meters above sea level. This peaceful mountain retreat was home to the Bektashi monk Sari Salltik Baba in the 14th century and remains a sacred pilgrimage site across the Balkans.
