Wolfsburg is located in Northern Germany in the state Niedersachsen and is situated on the Aller River. The city is famous for being the location of Volkswagen AG’s headquarters, but it has much more to offer.
Wolfsburg is one of the few German cities built during the 20th century. It was founded in 1938 as “Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben” (City of the KdF-car at Fallersleben) and planned as a town for the workers of Volkswagen. During World War II it became a factory of military equipment and in 1945 the city was occupied by American troops who changed the name of the city to its current denomination. After the war, the city grew constantly and, in the years, Wolfsburg became bigger and wealthier. In 1955 the one-millionth VW Beetle was manufactured.
The city has a modern center with the Autostadt as its most important attraction. The open-air-museum-theme park dedicated to automobiles has various pavilions of car brands but also a planetarium, a private art museum and the Phaeno Science center, Germany’s largest hands-on science museum. The most important historic buildings are the Wolfsburg Castle, first mentioned in 1302, the Burg Neuhaus from the 14th century and the Fallersleben Castle from the 16th century. In this car-city there is plenty to see and do and it is worth a visit.
