El impresionante edificio neoclásico que alberga el Altes Museum (Museo Antiguo) fue construido entre 1823 y 1830 por el famoso arquitecto Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Desde hace más de cien años, este museo da cobijo a una formidable colección de antigüedades clásicas (o Antikensammlung, en alemán). La exposición de arte de la antigua Grecia, completamente renovada en 2011, se encuentra en la planta baja del palacio, mientras que en la primera planta pueden visitarse diferentes exposiciones especiales. Desde 2010, el museo cuenta con una colección de obras y piezas de arte de la antigua Etruria y Roma .
