Alta

Northern lights, vast wilderness, and Arctic landscapes shape Alta, a town in northern Norway where nature takes centre stage throughout the year. Set at the head of the Altafjord above the Arctic Circle, it offers a mix of dramatic scenery, indigenous Sámi culture, and outdoor adventures that change with the seasons. You can spend your time chasing the aurora, exploring ancient rock carvings, or heading into the surrounding wilderness on foot, boat, or dog sled. Alta suits you if you're looking for wide-open spaces, unforgettable natural phenomena, and a genuine taste of Arctic Norway.

1. Chase the Northern Lights

Alta is one of Norway's best places to see the Aurora Borealis, thanks to its location beneath the auroral zone and relatively stable inland climate. From autumn through early spring, you can head away from town lights to watch green and purple ribbons dance across the sky. Many local tours combine the experience with storytelling, photography, or traditional Sámi culture.

2. Visit the UNESCO-listed rock carvings

Just outside the centre, the Alta Museum protects thousands of prehistoric rock carvings that date back as far as 7,000 years. These UNESCO-listed artworks offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Arctic hunter-gatherers, depicting animals, boats, and scenes from daily life. Walking paths connect the carvings through a scenic coastal setting.

3. Experience Arctic adventures year-round

The landscapes around Alta invite you outdoors no matter the season. In winter, you can try dog sledding, snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing across snowy plateaus. During summer, hiking trails, fishing spots, and fjord excursions reveal a greener side of the Arctic, with the midnight sun stretching the days well into the night.
