The inside story

The Museum Island is the name that was given to the northern part of the Sprea Island in the central district of Mitte in Berlin. Its name is due to the many internationally renowned museums that are located in this area, built between the nineteenth and twentieth century in place of port warehouses and industries.

They belong to the Museum Island: the Altes Museum, the oldest complex of the area that still hosts some of the rare collection of antiquities of Frederick William III; the Neues Museum, which holds the artifacts of Egyptian art and prehistory; the Alte Nationalgalerie, which houses a collection of works of art among the most important in Germany; the Bode Museum, which houses sculptures and other works of late antique and Byzantine art, and the famous Pergamon, with its monumental buildings reconstructed in its original size.
