As you proceed through the "azure motorway" along the Tyrrhenian coast, enjoy the sight of the white marble quarries of the Apuan Alps before entering the Ligurian territory and reach Riomaggiore. This beautiful village is characterized by medieval tower-homes, steps, alleys and small squares between two steep, hilly terraces. From here, stroll down the romantic Via dell’Amore, a smooth path along the cliffs leading to Manarola.
Continue on to Vernazza, one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. Vernazza perches on a rocky promontory stretching out toward the sea, its small port pressed against terraced, green hills. Get lost among lanes with dozens of shops as you’re tempted by seafood from a local restaurant.
From Vernazza, reach Portovenere in one hour by boat along the beautiful rugged coast. Portovenere will be waiting for you with the ancient beauty described in its name. Take a walk among shops selling local products and handicrafts on the seafront. Visit the Gothic Church of San Pietro, decorated with white and black bands; perched on top of the promontory, it was built on the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Venus. Admire the medieval sculptures of the Collegiate of San Lorenzo and the imposing Castello Doria overlooking the hamlet.
