The inside story
Experience a night of glitz and glamour at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Hear truly incredible music and see extravagant performances at the most important classical music organization in North America. In terms of seating, it is the largest opera house in the world, holding 3,800 people. Attracting some of the world’s top directing and conducting talent, every production is a unique event not to be missed.
The building itself is fairly new, but the Met Opera has been performing for over 100 years. It celebrated its fiftieth birthday in 2016, commemorating the year the Met Opera was moved to the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 1966.
Designed by Wallace K. Harrison, the building features a glass and bronze facade with enormous arching windows, bathing the interior with natural light and allowing you to admire the lobby from Columbus Avenue. Inside you will be dazzled by Swarovski crystal chandeliers, a ceiling entirely covered in 23-karat gold leaf, and 30-foot murals by Marc Chagall.
The Met Opera presents 27 operas each year in a season that lasts from late September through May, ranging from tragic love stories to comedy. Boasting a list of firsts, the Met Opera offered the U.S. premieres of some of the most important operas in the repertory, including Wagner’s works, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Das Rheingold, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Tristan und Isolde, and Parsifal.
Performances are given in the evening Mondays through Saturdays with a matinée on Saturday. A prestigious Met Opera show is more affordable than you think so claim your ticket in advance before they sell out!
