Mighty Meteora
When your name means ‘middle of the sky', you're no ordinary tourist attraction. It's a long trip to Meteora from Parga – but it's well worth the journey through the hills of western Thessaly. Meteora's ancient monasteries sit on top of sandstone towers carved out by Mother Nature. Originally, there were 24 built, of which six remain active. You'll visit the largest, the Monastery of Great Meteoron. At more than 600m, it's also the highest. Its frescoes are alone worth the trip up. Rounding off the day is some free time for lunch in Kalambaka followed by a chance to explore the red-roofed mountain town of Metsovo.
