It all starts at Barranco do Velho – a hillside hamlet on the slopes of Caldeirão Mountain. Explore the town to see a side of life untouched by tourism, and stop by the church to admire views over the valley below. It's then on to Paderne Castle – an ancient fortress where Christian armies and Moorish forces crossed swords for centuries.
In Fonte de Alte, you can take a dip in the natural springs, or snoop around the surrounding village where there's free time for lunch. Pico Alto viewpoint and Queda do Vigario waterfall are also on the agenda, before visiting Quinto do Freixo country estate to taste medronho – also known as Portuguese fire water.
