Majestically overlooking the Semois River, Bouillon Castle is a true historical gem waiting to be discovered.
It's one of the largest fortified castles in Belgium and is notorious for its connection with Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, leader of the first crusade. As you enter the first of three drawbridges, get ready to step back in time and discover the castle’s 1000 year history.
Have fun wandering along a maze of stone corridors and passageways, see the torture chamber, dungeons, cheese cellar and the 165 meter deep well. Learn about how it would have been able to give the castle a secret supply of food and water.
As you reach the highest point of the castle, marvel at the stunning panorama of the city and river below. As you climb back down, don’t miss out on the falconry shows that occur in the main courtyard where eagles, hawks and owls take flight!
Main exhibitions include the ‘Scriptura’ exhibition which shows the evolution of writing from the Middle Ages to the present day. You will also be able to view temporary exhibitions such as ‘The armed pilgrimage of Godefroy de Bouillon', a fresco brought to life with interactive panels and special effects that follow his life leading the first crusade.
With treasure hunts for children, torchlit experiences at night, jousting and even an annual Mediaeval Fair, the castle is a must-do when in Bouillon!
