If you think Corfu looks good along the coast, just wait ‘til you see the countryside. Head into the hills surrounding the pretty village of Paleokastritsa for a guided walking tour through parts of the island most tourists miss out on. The star of the show is Angelokastro – a 13th-century Byzantine fortress perched perilously atop a cliff.
Following an in-the-know local guide, you'll tread a path through vineyards, villages and vegetable gardens. There'll be time to shop for locally-made lace, honey and olive oil in Makrades, plus stops to snap a few selfies in Lakones and Krini – the stone cottages and churches overlooking the Ionian are almost made for Instagram.
At the Byzantine-era Angelokastro fortress, you can wander the cemetery ruins and see restored 18th-century frescos. But the real highlight is the view you get of Corfu's rocky north-west coast. You'll round things off with a swim at Aghios Georgios – a beach said to be the best on the island.
