Every school child in Britain learns that the date 1066 is synonymous with the town of Hastings and its famous battle, where William the Conqueror, er… conquered England. Set in East Sussex, it has all the usual delights of a cutsie seaside town, like the beach, pier, and Fishermen’s and Shipwreck Museums. But with a battle that shaped the course of the country, this is a town that’s wrapped up in a legendary history lesson. From the Saxon town and Norman castle to the battlefield and ruins of Battle Abbey, there are legions of attractions to explore here.
Top three things to do in Hastings
1. Visit the Battle of Hastings Site and Battle Abbey
Walk in the footsteps of King Harold II’s army on the battlefield of Hastings, where interactive displays and audio tours bring this pivotal chapter of history to life. Check out the Gatehouse Exhibition and see the exact spot where Harold fell – it’s where the high altar of the abbey church was built.
2. Spend the day by the seaside
When the great British weather is behaving, there’s nowhere better to be than by the seaside. Take a wander along the newly restored pier, ride the carousel, or stop for a coffee and soak up the coastal views. If you’re feeling energetic, there are plenty of watersports to try at the beach, too, like dinghy sailing, kitesurfing and paddle-boarding – though wetsuits are highly recommended for most of the year!
3. Mosey through the museums
The Fisherman’s Museum and shipwreck museums on Rock-A-Nore Road give a salty taste of life at sea. But, if you’re up for diving into the darker side of human history, then head to the seafront caves to visit the True Crime Museum. It boasts the largest collection of crime memorabilia in the UK, with everything from murder weapons to handwritten confessions.
