What to expect

One of La Palma's most sought-after boats, the Bussard is a delightful wooden vessel plying a very beautiful route. Sailing out of Tazacorte on the west coast, you'll glide in the shadow of 200m-high volcanic cliffs towards a secret spot for a dip in the Atlantic and some on-board tapas.

With a 97% positive rating on TripAdvisor, it's no surprise this is such a popular trip. It packs a lot into its four-hour duration. But as only 12 passengers are allowed on board, it's very much in demand. Sail northwards from Tazacorte, passing the cliffs of La Flamenca and Morro Negro among others – dark and unforgiving walls of lava.

Your captain will pick a nice spot for a swim – ask for goggles if you want to snorkel – and for a feast of tapas and grilled chicken, prepared in the Bussard's kitchen. Small numbers mean there's plenty of space. Relax on deck or sit under the shade of a canopy, or even lounge on a bow net and ‘float' just above the waves. Utter bliss.
