The inside story
Set beside the Royal Palace on one of Madrid’s most historic hillsides, the Royal Collections Gallery brings together centuries of Spanish royal history under one modern roof. Opened in 2023, this striking museum showcases treasures collected by the Spanish monarchy, from paintings and tapestries to ceremonial objects, armour and royal carriages. Its contemporary architecture contrasts with the historic surroundings, while large windows frame sweeping views over the city and the Campo del Moro gardens below.
As you move through the galleries, you can trace the legacy of the Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties through works by artists such as Velázquez, Caravaggio and Goya. Interactive displays and carefully curated exhibitions help place the collections within the wider story of Spain’s monarchy and cultural heritage. The gallery was built into the hillside beside the palace, with much of the structure hidden underground to preserve Madrid’s historic skyline.
