Discover the authentic soul of Matera on a guided walking tour that explores the Sassi in depth, one of the most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy. Starting from the historic center, the walk gradually leads into the Sassi districts, where houses, streets, and places of worship are shaped directly from the rock. As you move between Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, your local guide shares stories of everyday life, traditions, and spirituality that have defined this unique landscape for centuries.
The tour includes visits to two remarkable rock churches. In Sasso Barisano, you will explore the ancient Church of Sant’Antonio Abate, while in Sasso Caveoso you will reach the spectacular Madonna de Idris, dramatically set on a rocky outcrop overlooking the canyon. This sacred complex also preserves the ancient crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone and frescoes dating from the 12th to the 17th century.
You will also step inside a traditionally furnished cave house to better understand how families lived in the Sassi until the mid-20th century. The experience ends on a relaxed note with a small tasting of local Lucanian products.
