The inside story
Step back in time aboard Puffing Billy Railway, one of Australia’s best-loved heritage railways. Winding through the forests and fern-filled gullies of the Dandenong Ranges, this historic steam train has been carrying passengers through the countryside for more than a century. Open-sided carriages, vintage locomotives and scenic surroundings make the journey as memorable as the destination itself.
As the train chugs through towering eucalyptus forests and over historic timber trestle bridges, you can sit on the carriage sills and take in the fresh mountain air, a tradition that has become synonymous with the Puffing Billy experience. Along the route, there are opportunities to explore charming villages, walking trails and picnic spots tucked away in the hills. Puffing Billy is one of the best-preserved steam railways in the world and still runs on its original mountain track, first opened in 1900.
