Written during the serene summer months of 1901 and 1902 in Maiernigg on the Wörthersee, it reveals a mature artist in the midst of significant personal and professional changes. At the age of forty, Mahler was a prominent figure at the Vienna Opera and one of the most respected conductors of his time. His encounter with Alma Schindler, daughter of a renowned Viennese painter, in November 1901, and their subsequent marriage in March the following year, symbolize a profound love story concealed within the notes of the Symphony.
