The inside story
Sanssouci Palace, one of the most important cultural sites in Potsdam, is the former residence of the Prussian Kings and German Emperor. The name derives from the French "sans souci", which translates to "without worry". The beautiful building, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, was built by the Prussian King Frederick II in Rococo style between 1745 and 1747. He dreamed of a summer palace, a place he could use as a refuge and visit "without worries". The palace is located on picturesque vineyard terraces in the eastern part of the 300-hectare Sanssouci Park.
Book a tour of the palace and admire the magnificent interiors, such as the concert room, the marble hall, the library, the study and bedrooms. The elegant rooms still have their original designs and furnishings and exhibit beautiful art, sculptures and monuments.
A visit to the palace can also be combined with a city tour of Potsdam. Potsdam may not be big but there are many other important cultural places to visit in the city. Located only 40 minutes from Berlin, take the chance and plan a day or half-day trip to Potsdam and Sanssouci Palace. Many tours start from Berlin, so you don't have to worry about the transfer. But even by train and bus, the journey is fairly straightforward and takes around 1 hour from Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
