What to remember
Exploring the colonial heart of Quito on foot -
- Start: We will walk through picturesque cobbled streets lined with beautiful brightly colored colonial houses roofed with antique tiles and with balconies dressed in flowers, guarded by the winged Virgin of Quito sitting in the 'Panecillo'. The 'Panecillo', named for its bread-like shape, is a parasitic crater formed by magma from the Pichincha volcano.
- Visit the route to the bread roll: We will start in Benalcázar Street, then we will pass through the house of the conqueror Sebastián de Benalcázar and we will enter García Moreno Street. This street, also known as the Street of the Seven Crosses was an Inca route to the Panecillo, a hill that is believed to be a center of worship for the Gods of the Sun and the Moon. This Inca avenue became the street most influenced by Christianity in Quito when the Spanish arrived. They erected seven crosses along the avenue to make the natives believe in the Catholic God.
- Quito Cathedral: We walk along this street to the Plaza de la Independencia. On the south side of the square is one of the oldest cathedrals in South America and the sacred heart of the city: Quito Cathedral, an impressive white-walled building with green domes of glazed ceramics.
- Church of the Company : A few buildings above we will find the incomparable Church of the Company, a Jesuit church full of baroque art, its tragic history covered in gold to hide the devastating fire and earthquake that shook it. The great Plaza of San Francisco and its church have been a center of activity since pre-Inca times, when the square was the Tianguez (main market).
- La Cantuña: We will look for the mythical stone of the legend of Cantuña in the lobby of the church and visit the museum that houses four thousand pieces that include sculptures and oil paintings of the "Escuela Quiteña".
- Chapel of man: After our visit in the historic center we will not go to the famous "Chapel of Man", the last work of world-famous painter Oswaldo Guayasamín. This "chapel" is considered his last masterpiece, and houses many of his most recognized works.
- Return to Quito: After this visit, we will return to your hotel in Quito. Quito Cathedral
