Admire the Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs, one of the most famous of the Catholic world!
According to the tradition, the Empress St. Helena carried to Rome the staircase which Jesus had ascended on the day of his death sentence. This stair was brought to Rome from Pilate's praetorium in Jerusalem and it is known as Scala Pilati or Scala Sancta.
The Sanctuary hosts the chapel of the Popes, called the Sancta Santorum, where you’ll admire the Holy Savior. It was the private chapel of the Popes until the Renaissance and is the place where pilgrims can pray after reaching the final step of the Holy Stairs.
