Kick off this flavourful intro to all things Cuban with a tour of Arrechabala Rum Factory to observe the age-old process of creating Cuba's national drink. See first-hand the machinery and equipment used in its production and take a tour of the ageing cellars. Then, at Casa del Ron there'll be some tasting, too.

At upscale Plaza las Morlas you've free time to stroll the pretty marina or shop for souvenirs in the handicraft market before dinner. Ever since the world's eyes were opened to Cuba's musical vault with Buena Vista Social Club, the island's folk songs have been as big an attraction as any historic church or natural wonder. And here's a chance for you to experience the authentic rhythms of this legendary ensemble. A live all-star ensemble performs a mix of styles that encapsulates Cuban music; part-salsa, part-son, part-soul and part-jazz wrapped up in a collection of haunting melodies. If you've got any soul in you, you'll be shimmying to the rhythms within seconds. Set in Varadero's top concert venue and performed by musicians for whom the songs are a part of their identity, the show is as pulsating a demonstration of Cuban music as you'll see. This tribute to the Buena Vista Social Club of the late 90s is in keeping with the hallowed traditions of Cuba's live music scene.

Seatour Catamaran to Cayo Blanco

If you thought Varadero was the business, wait till you sail by catamaran to Cayo Blanco.
