The Crypt of the Sanctuary is the heart of the history of Santa Maria del Monte and it will be possible to visit it exceptionally also during the Christmas period. Inside, there are the remains of the first church built on the mountain and fourteenth-fifteenth century frescoes decorating the walls, as well as important archaeological evidence that testify to the antiquity of the cult and the place. The visit will also allow knowing the restoration works and the engineering solutions adopted for the reopening to the public occurred in 2015, as well as to admire the oldest "Nativity" of Santa Maria del Monte.
The ticket also includes admission to the Baroffio Museum, where authentic masterpieces of Lombard art are preserved, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, Flemish and Dutch paintings donated by Baroffio, and works by some protagonists of 20th century European art, such as Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault.
Thanks to the room with a Marian theme, desired by Monsignor Pasquale Macchi with more than sixty works by well-known artists of the 20th century, a special look at authors who have also worked at Sacro Monte such as Renato Guttuso, Floriano Bodini, Enrico Manfrini, and Trento Longaretti is offered. The private terrace of the Museum offers a wide view of the panorama.
