Explore Berlenga Grande, a protected island nature reserve off Portugal's Atlantic coast, on this full-day tour from Lisbon. The journey begins from central Lisbon, followed by travel to Peniche, a traditional fishing village. From Peniche, a 45-minute boat crossing takes you to Berlenga Grande, where rock formations, caves and beaches characterise the landscape.
After docking at the island's port, you'll have time to explore before taking a smaller boat to St. John the Baptist Fort. This 17th-century fortress, constructed from monastery ruins, sits on the island's rocky coastline. Your guide explains the fort's history, including its role in defending against invasions and pirate sieges. A 1-hour guided walk through Berlengas Nature Reserve follows, showcasing the island's plant and animal species.
Returning to the port area, you'll break for lunch at one of the seafront eateries (not included) or enjoy a picnic on the beach if you've brought provisions. The included cave boat excursion uses a glass-bottom boat to explore the island's caves and underwater rock formations.
