The inside story
Rising along the banks of the Tagus River, Padrão dos Descobrimentos is one of Lisbon’s most striking monuments, celebrating Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Built in the 20th century and shaped like the prow of a ship, it honours the explorers who set sail from these shores during the 15th and 16th centuries. From its dramatic riverside setting in Belém, the monument offers a powerful reminder of the voyages that helped shape global history.
You can step inside to learn more about Portugal’s maritime past through exhibitions, or take the lift and climb to the top for wide views over the Tagus, Belém Tower and the surrounding waterfront. At its base, a large compass rose map marks the routes of historic expeditions, offering a visual glimpse into the scale of these journeys. The monument features statues of key figures, including Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan.
