Hampton Court Palace, found in the London borough of Richmond upon Thames, is one of the palaces built over the centuries as residences for the Royal Family.
Though it hasn’t been used for that purpose since the 18th century it is today an ideal place for a day trip. Plan your trip to London and book your tickets in order to explore the halls that were once home to the British Royal Family. Your visit includes access to the palace, its famous maze and a multi-language audio-guide. While visiting the palace you can experience tours from costumed guides, children’s activity tours, the Young Henry the VIII exhibition and more.
Hampton Court Palace
The building was originally owned by the Knights Hospitaller until cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York, Prime Minister and favorite of King Henry VIII of England, took it as his residence in 1514. During the following seven years, Wolsey invested a lot of money to make the building one of the most luxurious and magnificent all over the country. Later, when the Cardinal fell from King Henry VIII's grace, the palace was taken and used as one of his own residences.
In the following century the structure was expanded in the hopes of rivaling the French royal palace of Versailles but when construction stopped abruptly in 1694 the building was left with two very contrasting architectural styles
Of the many palaces built by Henry VIII, Hampton Court Palace is one of the two remaining structures, the other being St. James’s Palace.
Visiting the Palace
Hampton Court Palace has a great many features that can spark everyone’s curiosity. Visitors come to the Palace for its halls, the artwork, exhibitions and guided tours. In addition to the attraction of the Palace the surrounding gardens are a beautiful example of late 17th century English gardening, built for sir Christopher Wren who had planned on making the palace his own residence.
The Hampton Court maze on the other hand, built in the late 17th century is made up of hedges, grown into a maze that gives visitors half a mile of paths to ‘lose’ themselves in. While the Chapel Royal is also found here and is known for being one of the most beautiful chapels in all of Britain.
