Good to know

It's the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, although they don't live in it.
Among its many masterpieces by Caravaggio, Velázquez and Goya, you'll also find the world's only complete Stradivarius string quintet.
On Wednesdays entry is free (although queues are longer), and you can also see the changing of the guards every half hour from 11am to 2pm at the Puerta del Príncipe, in front of Plaza de Oriente.
Mondays are usually busier because it's one of the few monuments open.
The Solemn Changing of the Guard takes place the first Wednesday of the month at 12pm. The parade is a flashback to the times of kings Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII, when this kind of ceremonious pomp was customary.
The royal armoury is considered one of the best in the world, with pieces dating from the 13th century.
If the weather is nice take a stroll in the the Palace gardens Sabatini and the Campo del Moro.

The inside story

The Royal Palace of Madrid (Palacio Real de Madrid) is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family;however, it is currently only used for receptions, ceremonies and official events. Nowadays, the kings of Spain reside in the Zarzuela Palace (Palacio de la Zarzuela),located on the outskirts of the Spanish capital. The Royal Palace is on the site of the former Quarterdeck of Madrid, a medieval fortress converted into a sumptuous palace by Juan II, Carlos V and Felipe II. The Quarterdeck was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve of 1734.

The construction of the Royal Palace began in 1738 and ended in 1764, year in which Carlos III established his residence there. Also known as "Palacio de Oriente", it is surrounded by the gardens of Campo del Moro and Sabatini Gardens. The building is inspired by Bernini's sketches for the construction of the Louvre in Paris, and is built around a square courtyard. It has a gallery and a "Plaza de Armas", where the main face of the palace is located.
