The inside story
Milan’s Cathedral, also called the Duomo of Milan, is located in the city’s central piazza. All the streets of the city seem to radiate from the Piazza of the Cathedral, making it obvious that this area was the center of the city as it was being constructed.
The Cathedral is an immense structure that took nearly 6 centuries to complete and the long construction period consequently went through the various architectural phases. The format and style was modified more than once during its construction, creating a unique, mixed style that produced both positive and negative reactions over history. The construction of the Cathedral was actually finished thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte, who was soon to be crowned King of Italy. According to his orders, the façade was completed in just 7 years and his coronation took place in the Duomo of Milan.
