Good to know

It's home to the one and only ‘David', the great work Michelangelo accomplished at just 26.
You'll know it from the long queues. Needless to say, it's best to get your tickets in advance.
It's a small museum and you can see more or less everything in an hour.
Michelangelo's ‘David' is deliberately out of proportion, with an unusually large head and hands (especially the right). Some say this is because it was intended for the cathedral rooftop and these features had to be emphasized to be seen from below.
Entry is free for those under 18 years of age.
The museum is closed Mondays, so plan your schedule accordingly.
Florentines adopted Michelangelo's ‘David‘ as a civic symbol, at a time when they were threatened by neighbor states and the recently exiled Medicis.
Classical music and opera fans will love the Museum of Musical Instruments, where you can see original instruments by Stradivari and Cristofori (the inventor of the piano).
It's not only about Michelangelo's ‘David'. There are other famous works to see, such as ‘Prisoners' (or Slaves) by Michelangelo, ‘The Rape of the Sabine Women' by Giambologna, ‘Tree of Life' by Pacino di Buonaguida, and the ‘Coronation of the Virgin' by Jacopo di Cione.

The inside story

The Academy of Fine Arts of Florence was founded in 1563 thanks to Cosimo I de’ Medici, who also was the force behind the construction of the Uffizi Gallery, together with artist and architect Giorgio Vasari. Today it is the permanent home of one of the best-known art galleries in the world, the Academy Gallery.

The very first pieces of this collection are believed to be the two great chalk replicas of the Giambologna statues that today can be found in the city’s Palazzo Vecchio, while today the Academy Gallery is most commonly known as being home to Michelangelo’s greatly celebrated ‘David’.

Over the years the collection has grown and expanded exponentially and in its long history, the gallery changed and evolved with the times.
