What to expect

A walking tour of the Generalife Gardens, the summer palace retreat of the Muslim kings of Granada, built during the reign of Mohammed III in the late thirteenth century.

The tour will start exploring the lower, labyrinth-like gardens, with their fountains, canals, Cyprus trees and rose gardens, before heading to the Generalife Palace, where we will take a look at each of its beautiful interior patios, including Patio del Descabalgamiento, Patio de la Guardia, Patio de La Acequia and Patio del Ciprés de la Sultana, before moving on to the high gardens, home to the famous water stairway and some of oldest trees in the entire palace complex, with sequoias and magnolias dating back over 150 years.

A stroll along the beautiful Paseo de las Adelfas and Paseo de los Cipreses walkways, will lead you to the bridge which connects the Generalife with the fortress and citadel of the Alhambra, which also includes the Parador de San Francisco museum-hotel, the baths of the Mosque, the church of Santa María de la Alhambra and the imposing Palace of the Emperor Charles V, with its fascinating Hispano-Muslim museum. Your visit to this monumental complex terminates in the Alcazaba, one of the oldest part of the Alhambra.

You will take a look inside this ancient fortress, with its military district, where the ruins of soldiers' houses can still be seen, as well as its various defense towers, Torre del Homenaje, Torre Quebrada, Torre de las Armas and the emblematic Torre de la Vela, with its Christian-style bell and the most spectacular 360º view across all of modern Granada, the Albaicín neighbourhood, the fertile valley and the highest mountain range of the Iberian peninsula, the Sierra Nevada.
