The inside story
Once you’ve soaked up your fill of Granada’s history and culture, set your sights on the rest of Andalusia. With so much within an hour or two of Granada by car, you could be hiking in the meadows and slopes of the Sierra Nevada or gazing up at Seville’s Gothic cathedral and back at your hotel in time for dinner. If walking trails are up your street, head to the Caminito del Ray, an historic cliffside walk that takes you a hundred metres above the Guadalhorce River through a pine-clad gorge. If it’s the history of the area that takes your fancy, then head to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Antequera Dolmens, or Ubeda and Baeza which are known for their Italian Renaissance architecture. And, if you feel the coast is calling, the ivory-painted village of Frigiliana and neighbouring Nerja are in easy reach for a daytrip, too – make sure you visit the Balcon de Europa for its panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.
